Walter H. Tony Abing, age 87, of Platteville, formerly of Belmont, died on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Heartland HealthCare in Platteville. He was born on June 8, 1921, in Potosi Township, the son of Joseph and Clara (Dressler) Abing. Tony attended school at Potosi and following graduation, he attended UWP Mining School. After receiving his education, he farmed in the Potosi area. On December 5, 1965, Tony was united in marriage to Mary Lou Tindell. Together, they owned and operated Platte River Cheese and Liquor. Tony was also employed with the Burlington North Railroad. Following his retirement, he delivered the Shopping News. Tony was a member of Knights of Columbus and enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing and watching the Packers. Tony loved spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by Mary Lou; his brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Ruth Abing; his sister-in-law, Mary Abing; his brother-in-law, Gerald Schmitz; step-daughter, Brenda Russell and a granddaughter, Hannah Runde.

Survivors include his children: Teresa Abing, Platteville; Angela (Don) Runde, Monona, IA; Sue (Todd) Halvensleben, Reedsburg; his step-children: Troy Russell, Ridgeway; Lisa Russell, Belmont; eight grandchildren: Amanda Abing and Jacob Loeffelholz, Connor, Ethan and Spencer Runde, Derek, Makenna and Ella Halvensleben, eight step-grandchildren: Anthony, Dylan, Jason, Greg, Brittany, Alonda, Ricky and Merissa; his brother: Francis Ed Abing, Platteville; his sister, Ann Schmitz, West Bend; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Monte Robinson officiating. Burial was in St. Andrew Cemetery, Tennyson. Friends called on Monday, March 23, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home in Potosi where a 7:00 p.m. prayer service will be held. Friends also called on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
