Victoria E. Babe Haverland, age 91, of Potosi, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at Manor Care in Platteville. Victoria was born on November 22, 1919 in Glen Haven, WI, the daughter of Clement and Mary (Blum) Gruender. She was a graduate of St. Andrew High School, Tennyson, and St. Marys Teachers College at Prairie du Chien. Her first teaching job was in New Diggins. Victoria married Orlin Haverland on September 16, 1942 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Glen Haven. After her marriage, she enjoyed raising her family and later taught at SS. Andrew-Thomas School. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and past president of the Altar Sodality. Victoria was also member of the Catholic Knights and VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by six children: Elaine (Bruce) Shanley, Platteville; Annette (Dan) Kitto, Waukesha; and Paul (Sandy) Haverland, Cassville; Keith, Joel (Sherrill), and Alan Haverland, all of Potosi; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Victoria was preceded in death by her husband, Orlin, on February 10, 2002; two brothers, Urban and Alphonse Gruender; five sisters, Veronica Lessner, Cecelia Bredael, Johanna Kalrath, Bernetta Hennebry, and Phyllis, Connell; and a grandson, David Davis.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 7, 2011, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Richard Leffler officiating. Burial was in St. Andrew Cemetery. Visitation was held from 1 to 4 pm with a 12:45 p.m. parish scripture service on Sunday, November 6, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. The Martin Funeral Home in Potosi is assisting the family. Memorials may be given to SS. Andrew-Thomas School.
