Verna C. Nickson, age 100, of Lancaster, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Lancaster Care Center, Lancaster. She was born on June 27, 1913, in Platteville Township, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Weigel) Johnsen. Verna attended Blockhouse Grade School and graduated from Platteville High School at the age of fifteen. She then went on to be a legal secretary with a law firm in Platteville and then came to Lancaster with the WPA in 1933. She was later employed by Attorney Frank Meyer who was the President of Union State Bank. Verna was employed at the bank for thirty-five years. On June 5, 1937, she was united in marriage to Edward J. Red Nickson. During retirement, Verna enjoyed spending time at home and with her husband. She also enjoyed bowling and ladies night out on Thursdays at the Lancaster Country Club. Verna was a fifty year member of the Lancaster Congregational Church and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.
Survivors include her son, Phil (Donna) Nickson, Yakima, WA; two grandchildren: Crystal (Randy) Cruz, Puyallup, WA; Matthew (Angelica) Nickson, Rio Rancho, New Mexico; five great-grandchildren: Zoe and Lila Cruz, Faith, Edward, and Estrella Nickson; a step-great-granddaughter, Tasha Cruz; nieces and nephews: Patricia Kliebenstein, Donna Horne, Lois Jenz, Douglas Von Glahn and Dr. David E. Miller.
In addition to her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husband and her siblings.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 9, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lancaster Congregational Church with Reverend Mark Dieter officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lancaster is assisting the family.
