Sylvia P. Schmitz, age 93, of Lancaster, died Friday, January 6, 2012, at the Lancaster Care Center.
She was born on July 4, 1918, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Keehner) Broihahn. Sylvia married Leo Schmitz on March 30, 1936, at St. Andrews Church in Tennyson, WI. Together they farmed in Tennyson and Lancaster. In 1954, they moved to Lancaster and Leo went to work for the City of Lancaster.
Sylvia was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church. She enjoyed her family, and talking to people on the telephone.
She is survived by her two daughters, Joan (John) Ames, and Joyce (Ray) Klaas; grandchildren, Julie (Terry) Knapp, Jim (Kathy) Ames, Jerry (Pauline) Ames, Joel (Tina) Ames, Jeff (Linda) Ames, Jon (Sandy Huffman) Ames, and Cord Myers; thirteen great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; many step great grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren; a brother, Lester (Shirley) Broihahn; and sisters-in-law, Pat Broihahn, Bernice Broihahn, Adele Stimart, Viola Steiger, and Celine Schmitz.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Leo on February 18, 1991; her parents, Fred and Elizabeth Broihahn; five sisters, Caroline Koeller, Rose Burke, Mary Stimart, Ivanelle Ahler, and Alma Nodell; five brothers, Hubert, Ray, Ivan, Mervin and Ed Broihahn; a granddaughter, Kim Myers; and a step grandson, Duane Schafer.
Graveside Services were held at 3 pm on Monday, January 9, 2012, at Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Friends called from 2 pm to 3 pm on Monday at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster.
In lieu of plants and flowers, a Sylvia P. Schmitz memorial fund has been established
