LANCASTER – Sidney D. “Sid” Fischer, age 86, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Dove Health Care in Fennimore. He was born on April 25, 1938, in Woodman Township, the son of John and Ruth (Koenig) Fischer. Sid graduated from the eighth grade at Anderson Mills grade school in Woodman Township and in 1955, he graduated from Boscobel High School. After graduation, Sid worked on a farm and in May of 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army and spent most of his time in California. Upon his return from the service, he married Betty Staskal on June 20, 1959. After their marriage, they moved to Madison. City life was not for Sid, so they moved back to Grant County in 1963. After working on several farms in the Fennimore and Boscobel area, in 1969, Sid rented a farm south of Lancaster. In 1974, he moved his family to their current farm which they have farmed for over fifty years. Sid enjoyed Monday night bowling, playing golf and going to coffee at Zippy’s. He dearly loved his family and farming. Sid served on the Christ Lutheran Church council for three years, Farm Bureau Board for twelve years where he also served as President for six years, four years on the Grant County Board of Supervisors, and was a board member of the Grant County Farmers and Wisconsin Dairies.
Survivors include the love of his life, his wife, Betty; two daughters, Wanda Runde of Darlington and Debbie (Alan) Bendorf of Stitzer; a son, Russell (Tami) of Bixby, OK; seven grandchildren: Angela Olson and Brandon Runde, Remington Fischer, Amanda Webb and Dakota Fischer, and Josh Bendorf and Andrea Barry; six great-grandchildren; siblings: Jerry, Lonny (Laurayne) and Judy (Harold) Schuppner; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Sid was preceded in death by his brothers, Clayton, Leary, and Lyle; sister, Nancy; and a sister-in-law: Sheri Fischer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends may visit on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. In lieu of plants and flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in memory of Sidney Fischer to Lancaster Rescue Squad, Lancaster and Bloomington Fire Departments, Parkinson’s Foundation, American Cancer Society, and/or the American Heart Association.
