Shirley M. Crow, age 84, formerly of Platteville died from Alzheimers disease on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center in Madison. She was born on December 4, 1923 in Platteville, WI the daughter of Frank and Wanda (Peacock) Hellmer. Shirley graduated from Platteville High School in 1942. She married Donald Crow and they were later divorced. Shirley has lived in Bakersfield, CA and Nevada but Platteville was always home. The last four years, she has lived at the Ingleside Nursing Home in Mount Horeb.
Shirley worked as a nursing assistant at Grays Nursing Home in Platteville and an interior designer at Graves Paint and Paper. She was one of three founding members of the VFW Womens Auxiliary.
Shirley loved animals, was fond of the outdoors, enjoyed gardening and traveling and was an avid walker. Growing up she loved to swim at Big Rock. Shirley enjoyed a variety of music and dance, sewing, painting, doing crafts, refinishing furniture, and watching football. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Shirley is survived by two children: Stephen Crow and Karen (Crow) Burg, both of Madison; six grandchildren: Kimberly Melvin, Reedsburg, Jody Gates, Evansville; Phil (Annette) Crow, Monfort; Paul Crow, Madison; Anisha (John) Olsen, Stoughton and Andrea Burg, Madison; five great-grandchildren: Matthew Melvin, Ryan and Trina Olsen, Madisen and Mya Crow; a sister-in-law, Alyce Susie Hellman, McFarland; nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Corwin Tweet Hellmer.
Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville (100 Park Place, Platteville 608.348.2446) with the Reverend John Christianson officiating. Burial wase held later in Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Family and friends were welcomed from 11:00 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home where there will be a VFW Womens Auxiliary Service at 11:00 a.m.
