Shirley L. Bartels

Shirley L. Bartels, age 91, of Dubuque, formerly of Burton, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at Sunnycrest Manor Nursing Home in Dubuque, with her family by her side. She was born on May 28, 1928, the daughter of Ralph and Kathryn (Potter) Reed. Shirley graduated from Cassville High School and furthered her education at beautician school in Dubuque. On November 2, 1946, she was united in marriage to Donald Bartels at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Burton. They lived most of their married life in Burton and were married for 50 years and had four children. Shirley was a lady of many talents. She loved to crochet, counted cross-stitch, sew, and play cards. Later in life, Shirley moved to Dubuque and enjoyed volunteering and going to the casino.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and her brother, Joe Reed.
Survivors include her children: Donnalene (Jack) Turner; Margo (Roger) Mink; Randall Bartels; Terry (Nancy) Bartels; her grandchildren: Kimberly (Dale) Udelhoven; Dawn (Jessie) Knight; Julie (David) Laraia; Matthew Mink; Mindy (Adam) Markus; Jody (Doug) Cushman; Nicholas and Samantha Bartels; her great-grandchildren: Tyler and Hannah Udelhoven; Makenzie and Allison Knight; Joseph Laraia; Jordan and Jonah Mink; Maggie Markus; Wyatt and Kindle Cook.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory, 1234 S Madison, Lancaster, with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating. Private burial will be in Burton Cemetery, Burton. Family and friends may call on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
