Ruth Marian McClain, age 95, of Platteville, died Thursday, August 28, 2014, at the Southwest Health Center in Platteville.
Marian was born Ruth Marian McPherson on September 17, 1918 in Platteville,
Wisconsin, a daughter of Arthur & Orpha (Gillian) McPherson. Marian attended Cornelia grade school through eighth grade, graduated from Platteville High School and Platteville State Teachers College. She taught in the public grade schools of Casper School, Boomer School, Maple Glen School, Vondra School, and O. E. Gray School. Her early teaching was in rural one-room schools with first through eighth grades. She then became a Grant County Social Worker until retirement. Marian was a lifelong member of the Mount Zion United Church of Christ in Cornelia, Wisconsin.
Marian enjoyed gardening, jigsaw puzzles, morel hunting, garage sales, picnics in the pasture, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Marian is survived by her son, Bruce (Sue) of St. Peter, Minnesota; her grandchildren, Michael (Nancy) of Mankato, Minnesota, Lisa (Maynard) Manthe also of Mankato, and David (Marie) of Potosi, Wisconsin; and eight great grandchildren, James and Daniel McClain, Benjamin, Jessa, Nicholas Manthe, and Tyler, Zachary, & Collin McClain.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, LaVern McClain, who passed away on February 2, 2008; her parents; her sisters, Maudie, Jenny, Gretta (Knox), Dorothy (McClain), Lou Ella (Withrow Felderman); and her brothers, Arthur Lee and Clifford McPherson.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2014, at the Mt. Zion UCC in Cornelia, with Rev. Zayna Thompson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Friends called one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Platteville is assisting the family.
Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Zion Cemetery or the Mt. Zion United Church of Christ.
Marians family is grateful that her difficult final months have ended. We wish to express our gratitude to her church community, friends, and family who have been very supportive during this last stage of her journey in life.
