Paul J. Schumacher, age 58, of Potosi, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 9, 2009 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. He was born on December 2, 1950 the son of Leonard Ben and Mercille (Leeser) Schumacher. Paul graduated from Potosi High School and University Wisconsin Platteville with a degree in Accounting. He was united in marriage to his love, Susan (Croft) Kopp on July 10, 1993 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Potosi. Paul was a rural mail carrier in Potosi for over 30 years and retired in 2007.

Pauls greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. He loved, inspired and supported his children and nieces in many activities, especially their athletic events and homework. He was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed hockey, Milwaukee Brewers and other baseball games and UWP football and basketball. Paul was a gentle man who was very knowledgeable about many topics including history, astronomy, music and current events. He was a nature lover and enjoyed bird watching. Paul also collected baseball cards and Lionel Trains.


Paul is survived by his wife, Sue and their two daughters, Kristen and Hillary, Potosi; a step-son, DJ Kopp, Platteville; and three nieces who were like daughters to him, Jenny Morgan, Bangor, Amy (James) Haase and Geri Morgan, both of Potosi, also Bob and Rosie Schumacher and family. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dallas and Helen Croft, Fennimore; a sister-in-law, Donita Croft, Madison; two brothers-in-law, Mike Croft (Sonjia Short), Fitchburg and Terry (Ginger) Croft, Belleville; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barb Morgan.


Family and friends were welcome on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 3:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Potosi with Father Richard Leffler and Father Lawrence Kieffer concelebrating. Burial was in St. Thomas Cemetery, Potosi. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund was established.
