Oscar J. "Bud" Wegmann, age 88, of Bloomington, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Madison. He was born on October 18, 1924, on the Wegmann family farm in Bloomington Township, the son of Henry and Emma (Osterhaus) Wegmann. Henry and Emma were part of a group of forty families who came from the Dyersville, IA, area to settle on farms in the Bloomington area in the early 1900s. Bud served his country in the United States Army from 1945-1947 stationed in Germany and Austria. On October 6, 1951, he was united in marriage to Coletta C. Wiest at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville. Together they farmed on the Wegmann family farm where Oscar has lived his entire life. He was a dedicated farmer and had an avid interest in registered Holstein cattle. Bud developed his herd with the prefix Blakes Prairie and shared this interest with many friends in the Holstein Association. Oscar enjoyed showing his cattle at fairs and other dairy shows when his children were members of the Blakes Prairie Bombers 4-H Club. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church and the American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington.
Survivors include his wife, Coletta; children: Angela (John) Krogman; Martina (Patrick Huffman) Kief; Beth Wegmann; Mark (Mary) Wegmann; Patricia (Paul Sena) Wegmann; five grandchildren: Ken (fianc Amber Rowe) Krogman; Steve Krogman; Emily, Michael, and Madison Wegmann; brother, Joe (Elizabeth) Wegmann; sister, Norma (Jerry) White; and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Oscar was preceded in death by his siblings: Marie (Ray) Errthum; Sr. St. Thomas OSF; Frances (Leonard) Schauff; Sr. Clare OSF; his mother and father-in-law, Vincent and Rose Wiest.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, August 31, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marys Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial with military honors was in Blakes Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington Township. Family and friends called on Friday, August 30, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Marys Catholic Church in Bloomington where a 3:45 p.m. parish rosary was held and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Bloomington is serving the family.
