Nellie M. Altom, age 103, of Fennimore, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Society. She was born August 7, 1906, the daughter of Harry and Emma (Sandifer) Titus in Smithboro, IL. Nellie graduated from Mulberry Grove High School and attended Eastern Illinois Teachers College and taught elementary grades for 10 years at Walshville, Myatt, Elm Point, McCord and Smithboro Schools.
On May 31, 1930, Nellie married Charles O. Altom in Greenville, IL. She assisted him in a photographic business with hand color tinting of black and white pictures. She was a member of the First Christian Church and served many years in the Sunday School, Missions and Home Departments. She was a devoted caretaker for her parents and husband until his death in 1974.
Nellie moved to Lancaster, WI in 1979 to be near her family. She volunteered at the Grant County Thrift Shop and was active in the Calvary Community Church Missions group.
Nellie is survived by her daughter, Linda Lyons, Fennimore; two grandsons: Dr. Matthew (Robin) Lyons, Odon, IN and Dr. Justin Lyons (fianc, Samantha Lawrentz), Ashland, OH; two great-granddaughters: Sarah and Abigail Lyons.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and her brother, Harry Titus, Jr.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009 at First Christian Church in Greenville, IL with Pastor Darrel Bolen officiating. Burial was in Montrose Cemetery, Greenville, IL. Visitation was held from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster, WI and from 12:00 p.m. until time of services on Monday, December 7 at the church in Greenville, IL.
The Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster, WI and the Donnell-Wiegard Funeral Home in Greenville, IL is serving the family.
