Merlyn D. Slaght, age 84, of Lancaster died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. He was born on December 13, 1923 in Burton, WI, the son of Elvin and Gladys (Irish) Slaght. He attended country school and then graduated from Potosi High School. Merlyn served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. On September 12, 1946, he married Doris Bohringer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They lived on Burton Hill and later moved near Hurricane and finally to Lancaster in 1950. He was employed with Waterloo Township and later with John Deere in Dubuque, IA. Merlyn retired in 1982. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Slaght, Lancaster; his daughter, Debbie (Daniel) Slaght, Cassville; and his sister, LaVon Meier, Potosi.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Maleta Stluka.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008 at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating. Burial was in Blakes Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington Township. Visitation was held on Friday, July 18, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
