Mercedes W. Holzer, age 92, of Lancaster, died on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. She was born on August 12, 1917, in the Boice Creek area of Potosi Township, the daughter of Frank and Rosa (Pennekamp) Holzer. During World War II, she was employed with Allis Chalmers in West Allis. She later worked for the Burgess Battery Factory in Platteville, upon its closing; she was employed at the Best Western Welcome Inn, Lancaster. Mercedes enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and gardening. She was a member of St. Clement Church.
Survivors include her sisters, Mildred Herman, Greenfield; Charlotte Hying, Platteville; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Holzer, Fennimore; Marjorie Holzer, Lancaster; many nieces and nephews.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Donald, Msgr. Ambrose, Norbert, and Jerome; and six sisters: Isabel Flesch, Louise Sarge, Bernadine, Dorothy, Mary, and Rita Holzer.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Monday, July 19, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster where a 3:45 p.m. rosary will be held. Friends also called on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.
