Maynard E. Barney Sanger, age 86, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at the Lancaster Care Center. He was born on July 3, 1925, in Lancaster, the son of Lou and Chloe (Klarman) Sanger. Barney attended Lancaster High School. He entered the United States Army and served his country in the European Theatre during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Barney was employed at Dubuque Insulation and Siding. On May 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ada Griswold at the Lancaster United Methodist Church. He later worked at Webb Plumbing. When the jail was built in Lancaster, Barney began there working in maintenance, until his retirement in the early 1990s. Barney was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church, the Richard Burns American Legion Post No. 109 of Lancaster and was a volunteer with the Lancaster Fire Department. He was an avid sports fan, especially the Detroit Lions. Barney enjoyed dancing, golfing, bowling and playing cards. He also enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his three children: Dan (Nancy) Sanger, Boscobel; Richard Ted (Julie) Sanger and Lori (Larry) Jerrett, all of Lancaster; six grandchildren: Kent, Doug, Maria, Aaron, Andrea and Lucas; his longtime companion, Kay Sherwin, Lancaster; two sisters: Dee Pohle, Lancaster; Arlene (Jack) Sutliff, Park Forrest, IL; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Sanger, Lancaster; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Barney was preceded in death by his wife, Ada; his brother, Robert Archie Sanger; a sister, Kate (Harold) Holzinger; and a brother-in-law, Bill Pohle.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 26, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating. Burial with military honors was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
