Maynard J. Schmitz, age 64, of Patch Grove, died on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at his home in Patch Grove. He was born on December 11, 1944, in Lancaster, the son of Maynard and Loretta (Timmerman) Schmitz. He graduated from West Grant High School in 1963. In November of 1966, Maynard entered the Untied States Army and served his country until his honorable discharge on October 6, 1971. On May 4, 1974, he was united in marriage to Myra Lang at St. Johns Catholic Church in Patch Grove. Maynard was employed with Kussmaul Seeds for twenty-five years. He also worked for Nelson Hardwoods in Prairie du Chien for twelve years, retiring in April 2007. Maynard was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church, the Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington, and the Patch Grove Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards, especially Euchre.

Survivors include his wife, Myra of Patch Grove; his son, Eric (Brianne) Schmitz, Gilbert, AZ; his brothers and sisters: Marcella (Leonard) Mulrooney, Mt. Hope; Marian Swab, Madison; Carol (Maurice) Parkins, Glen Haven; Jim (Marlys) Schmitz, Mt. Hope; John (Danielle) Schmitz, Camp Hill, PA; Joe (Kay) Schmitz, Mt. Hope; Bob (Connie) Schmitz, Woodman; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Maynard was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Sweeney.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Johns Catholic Church in Patch Grove with Father Bart Timmerman officiating. Burial with military honors was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor, IA. Friends called on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at St. Johns Catholic Church in Patch Grove and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday. Family suggests memorials be given to the Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 for the proposed Veterans Memorial Fund. Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family.
