Martha M. Schmidt, age 86, of Cassville, WI, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 30, 2011, at the Lancaster Care Center. Martha Marie Stegne was the only child born to Henry and Elnora (Ihle) Stegne on February 23, 1925. She graduated from Viroqua High School and attended business school in Wausau.
It was love at first sight when she met her future husband Arnold Schmidt at a Luther League Conference. They later married in Viroqua on February 5, 1947, and were blessed with 4 children: Jerry (deceased), John (Wynn), Melanie (Joe) Reynolds, and Annette; 5 grandchildren, Zack (Kellie) Schmidt, Sam (Jess) Schmidt, Jeannie (Kevin) Udelhofen, Joey Reynolds, Jenny (Udel) Udelhofen; 6 great-grandchildren, Logan & Jase Udelhofen, Alex & Lily Reynolds, and Abriana & Andraya Errthum.
Martha started her business career in La Crosse, and after marriage, worked at the Post Office in Stoddard, retiring from the Cassville Post Office in 1987. She loved to play bridge, bowl, and was a beautiful seamstress. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, and leading youth and her own children in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4-H. She was devoted to the Lutheran Religion and served the Cassville St. Peters Lutheran Church in many capacities. Her family was very important to her along with her Norwegian heritage.
Funeral Services were held at 1 pm on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Cassville, with Pastor Pam Strakeljahn officiating. Burial was in Cassville Cemetery. Visitation was held from 9:30 am to 12:30 am on Tuesday, October 4, at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville.
