Mabel Elaine (Hanson) Moore, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and Christian of Lancaster, WI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2023. She was 95 years old. “Mom” to her three daughters and “Grandma Mabel” to her seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren will be remembered for her love of playing cards, golf, and most of all, her love of her family.
Born on May 19, 1928, the daughter of Henry and Alma Hanson, Mabel was raised on her family’s farm outside of Gays Mills. She graduated from Gays Mills High School. Throughout her life, Mabel honored her Norwegian roots, especially through her famed krumkake dessert at Christmastime.
On October 8, 1947, Mabel married the love of her life, Bert C. Moore, at Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church. They were married for 68 years and lived in Gays Mills, Boscobel, and Darlington before settling in Lancaster, where she lived for nearly 60 years. Mabel’s enduring love and continual care for Bert in his final years were a model of total devotion to her family.
Mabel will be remembered for providing a loving home for her family. She took pride in her homemaking, through the recipes that have become family traditions, the matching pajamas, baby blankets, and other items she sewed for her children and grandchildren, and the decorations that she lovingly made for each holiday season. Outside the home, she worked as a legal secretary for many years and was an active member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church, including being President of the Laurinda Circle.
Mabel found great joy in playing Bridge and Euchre with friends and continued to beat her family in 500 Rummy throughout her life. She was a member of a Red Hatters group and loved their monthly outings and colorful style. And while an enthusiastic Badger basketball and football fan, her primary sport was golf. She golfed regularly at Lancaster Country Club, taught her daughters to golf, and continued to play with family and friends into her mid-80’s.
Mabel’s true devotion in life was to her family, who loved her dearly in return. Mabel will be lovingly remembered by three daughters: Susan (Robert) Gensmer, Sheri (Richard) Humphrey, and Stacey (Jim) Gannon; seven grandchildren: Lisa (Todd Wolfe) Lechner, Laura (Harold) Poston, John (Connie Keung) Moore Humphrey, Lindsey (Brian) Hirt, Jessica (Drew) Melby, Whitney (Daniel) Gannon Rynne, and Drew (Sid) Gannon Singh; fifteen great-grandchildren: Alex (Summer), Jake, and Tyler Lechner; Carolyn and Katie Poston; Isaac Humphrey; Davis, Jett, Mabel, and Calvin Hirt; Solveig, Sam, Kit and Molly Melby; and Hari Singh; and two great-great-grandchildren: Lainey and Cayden Lechner.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband Bert Moore; her parents and her siblings: Lillian, Helen and Herman, her favorite Uncle Andrew and her dear friend of 75 years Alice Galer.
