Lloyd John Runde, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2024, at University Hospital in Madison. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Donna (Brewer) Runde, and their children Randal Runde of Dodgeville, Kathy (Victor) Vourcos of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Steven of Canton, Michigan. Lloyd was the proud grandfather of four grandchildren Angela (Joe) Olson, Brandon Runde, Nicholas Vourcos, and Alyssa Vourcos, and two great-grandchildren.
Lloyd was born in Dubuque, Iowa on June 12, 1934 to Earl and Mary Olive (Dunleavy) Runde. Lloyd attended high school in Platteville, Wisconsin and worked on the family farm. During 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was trained to serve with the Military Police before being stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Lloyd worked for the Grant County Sheriff’s Department from January 1959 until his retirement from his full-time duties in June 1999. He served as the Chief Deputy under four Sheriffs. After retirement, Lloyd continued working part-time as a Bailiff at the Grant County Courthouse until December 2017. Lloyd also served on the Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Law Enforcement Advisory Board for 20 years.
When not working, Lloyd enjoyed playing softball, golfing, boating, waterskiing, snowmobiling, and riding around the county in his UTV. He was active in various snowmobile clubs, served as a Director to the Wisconsin Association of Snowmobile Clubs, and was still an officer with the Grant County Snowmobile Association at the time of his death. For more than30 years, Lloyd taught snowmobile safety courses. Once ATVs became popular, he began teaching ATV safety courses as well.
Lloyd is also survived by his brothers Faber (Jeanette) Runde of Kieler and Everett Runde of Platteville, his sister Joyce (Howard) Hull of Platteville, sister-in-law Ruth Runde of Platteville, brother-in-law Ronald (Kathy) Brewer of Wauzeka, and nieces and nephews. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth Runde, sister-in-law Phyllis Runde, and his in-laws Wallace and Lela Brewer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father Mark Miller officiating. Burial will be held at St. Mary Calvary Cemetery in Platteville. Family and friends may call on Thursday, August 15, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Lancaster and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, donations may be made to the Grant County Cancer Coalition or to the Southwest Opportunities Center. The family is being assisted by Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Lancaster.
