Lewis W. Groom, age 85, of Cassville, died Sunday, December 13, 2009 on the family farm where he was born. He was born on April 4, 1924, the son of Harvey and Gertrude (Webber) Groom. Lewis graduated from Cassville High School in 1942. He was united in marriage to Norma Andrew on July 28, 1956 at the Rock Church , rural Livingston . Together they farmed on his family farm. Lewis also owned and operated L & N Transfer, which transported freight and livestock, from 1956 until he sold the business in 1979. He was always a hard worker, and also enjoyed carpentry, trains and antique tractors.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma Groom, Cassville; seven children: Lorraine Groom Ashmore, Cassville, Larry (Carla) Groom, Cassville, Gayle (Kevin) Koeller, Dubuque, Glenda (Andrew) Kunz, Stitzer, Julie Groom, Cassville, Joan (Dean) Mish and Nancy (Bill) Goforth, both of Potosi; 13 grandchildren: Marcus and Martin Groom, Amy (Tommy) Ming, Matthew, Alan, Anthony, Christopher, Nicholas, Andrea and Joshua Kunz, Cole and Kate Mish and Michael Goforth; his sister, Patricia Schauff, Cassville and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Pearl Groom; five brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Visitation was held from 3:00 until 8:00 pm. on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the Martin Funeral Home in Cassville. Private family services were held with burial in the Rock Church Cemetery , Clifton Township .

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be given to the Cassville Fire and Rescue Squad or Southwest Health Center Hospice, Platteville.

The family would like to thank Dr. Wendy Molaska, Dr. Aditya Sukhwal and all the staff at Southwest Health Center for the care and compassion shown to Lewis and the family during his stay there. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Southwest Health Center Hospice and the Cassville Rescue Squad for making it possible to fulfill dads wish to live his final days at home.
