Laverne "Shot" Doll

Mr. Laverne Shot Doll, a longtime Lancaster businessman and community leader, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Orchard Manor in Lancaster. He was born in Mt Hope, Wisconsin on July 5, 1929 to Willis and Glennie (McCluskey) Doll. On October 3, 1953, he married Jeanne Pink at St Clements Catholic Church in Lancaster.

He served in the Korean Conflict as an armored tank commander and was discharged with the rank of Sgt 1st Class. He was a lifetime member of the Wm Pollock VFW Post 2344 and former Quartermaster for 10 years. He was a continuous member of the American Legion Post 109.

He completed auto body training and became a General Motors Certified Body Mechanic. In 1961, Shot founded Lancaster Auto Body Shop in a partnership with Joe & Janice Turner. After 14 years in auto body, he sold to Maurice Thole, and established Coast to Coast, which later became Doll Hardware. The hardware store was in business for 27 years.

He served on the Lancaster Fire Department for 28 years and the Lancaster Rescue Squad for 19 years.

Shot is survived by his wife, Jeanne of 57 years; three children, Bob (Bev) Doll of Lancaster, John (Deneen) Doll of Lancaster, and Mary (Marty) Mumm of Cassville; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great step-grandchild; and a sister, Nancy (Roger) Leibfried of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; and a brother, Lloyd.

A memorial mass was held at 11 am on Friday, June 24, 2011, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster, with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial with Military Honors was in Hillside Cemetery in Lancaster. Visitation was from 5 to 8 pm on Thursday, June 23, at St. Clement Catholic Church, and one hour prior to the mass on Friday. Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster is serving his family.
