LaVerne L. Oyen

POTOSI – LaVerne L. Oyen, age 83, of Potosi, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Southwest Health in Platteville.  He was born on January 13, 1940, in Jamestown Township, the son of Peter and Celestine (Brink) Oyen.  LaVerne attended St. Andrew Catholic School in Tennyson.  He worked for various farmers and was also a laborer with several organizations, including Hinderman Brothers, Dubuque Pack, and Finley Hospital, retiring in 2011.  On September 17, 1966, LaVerne was united in marriage to Marlene Helbing at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster.  Together they raised their twin daughters, Rhonda and Robin.  LaVerne enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid Wisconsin sports fan.  He also enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre and Cribbage and 500, but by his own rules.  LaVerne dearly loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He liked to joke around and play tricks on them.  LaVerne will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Marlene; their daughters, Rhonda Ferrel and Robin Wagner; five grandchildren: Cody, Shayla, Katie, Rylee, and Autumn; five great-grandchildren: Kayleigh, Riley, Remy, Rycker, and Rigley; his siblings: Cyril (Aliese), Dale (Nancy), Darlene Sabers, Margaret Eastlick, Betty Peacock, and Ruth (Ronnie) Richardson; his in-laws: Gracie Oyen, Delores Oyen, Rita Oyen, Pete Neis, Ella Kittoe, and Richard Helbing; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, LaVerne was preceded in death by his siblings: Harold (Rosie), Eldon (Doris), Philip, Nilus, Ronnie, James, Doris Neis, and Linda Oyen; his in-laws: Eugene Sabers, Gerald Eastlick, Gary Peacock, LeRoy Helbing, and Eugene Helbing. 

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Mark Miller officiating.  Private family burial will be in St. Andrew Cemetery, Tennyson at a later date.  Family and friends may call on Thursday, November 9, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. when the funeral service will take place at the church.  In lieu of plants and flowers, a LaVerne L. Oyen Memorial Fund has been established.  Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Potosi is assisting the family.
