Joseph J. "Bimp" Stohlmeyer, age 79, of Potosi, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. He was born on January 12, 1937, in Potosi, the son of Clarence and Evelyn (Schmelz) Stohlmeyer. Bimp graduated from St. Andrew Catholic High School in 1955. He was employed with Dubuque Packing Company from 1955 until 1967, when he purchased a service station. Bimp owned and operated Stohlmeyer Service Station for many years. After he sold the service station, Bimp was employed at Kieler Garage until his purchase of Bimp's Service in Potosi, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2008. In 1961, Bimp entered the United States National Guard and served his country during the Berlin Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1967. Bimp enjoyed car races, deer hunting and bowling. In his younger years, he enjoyed traveling. Bimp was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Knights Branch 42, St. Andrew Choir, the American Legion Post No. 473 of Potosi, and was a charter member of the Potosi/Tennyson Lions Club. Bimp also served on the Potosi School Board for 19 years. He sponsored Bimp's Softball and Bowling teams.
Survivors include his siblings: Henry (Celine); Michael (Elizabeth); Harold (Mary Pat) Stohlmeyer; Eva Lyons; Pauline "Teenie" Wiezorek; William J. (Mary E.) Stohlmeyer; Mary Ann (Robert) Durst; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Richard Powers; sister-in-law, Sandra Stohlmeyer; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Bimp was preceded in death by his siblings: Harriet and Paul Stohlmeyer and Elizabeth "Betty" Powers; niece, Sandra Stohlmeyer; brothers-in-law, Tom Lyons and Edward "Ed" Wiezorek.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Richard Leffler officiating. Burial with military honors was in St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends called on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson where a 2:30 p.m. rosary was prayed. Family and friends also called on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, a Joseph J. "Bimp" Stohlmeyer Memorial Fund has been established. Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Potosi is serving the family.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, IA, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Palliative Care in Iowa City, IA, and Orchard Manor Nursing Home in Lancaster for their care. The family would also like to thank all of Bimp's friends for their visits, especially Mert Kruser and Kent and Jan Syverson.
