John Hoffman

John A. Hoffman, age 74, passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. He was born December 12, 1941 at home in Smelser Township, the son of Elmer and Mary (Scharff) Hoffman. John graduated from Cassville High School in 1960. He served in the U. S. Army from 1963 to 1966 in Germany, and from 1966 to 1972 in Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. On November 3, 1973 he was united into marriage to Marian E. Roesch. John worked for area farmers in his early years. He was later employed at Flexsteel and A. Y. McDonald both in Dubuque. John enjoyed taking care of his garden, yard and bird watching. He also liked having coffee with his friends at the Roadhouse and Haverland's Bar. John was a member of the American Legion Post No. 473 and Berg Averkamp VFW Post No. 5272 in Potosi. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone.

Surviving is his wife of 42 years, Marian; his children, Angela Cooley and Brian (Sheryl) Hoffman; three grandchildren, Blake Cooley, Dakota and Cheyenne Hoffman; mother-in-law, Mercille Roesch; his siblings, Paul (Donna), Richard (Edna), Jeanette (Hubert) Nohns, Arthur, Brenda, George (Kathy) Hoffman; and many nieces, nephews, & members of the Roesch family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond; and his father-in-law, Eldon Roesch.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Martin Funeral Home in Potosi with Pastor Gordon Cunningham officiating. Burial with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 473 and Berg Averkamp VFW Post No. 5272, was in the Van Buren Cemetery, Potosi. Family and friends called on Monday, August 22, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Potosi, and on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
