John F. Stuer, Sr, age 87, of Dubuque, died Saturday, December 22, 2012 at his home. John was born on September 26, 1925, the son of Frederick and Lydia (Hird) Stuer.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946, and was stationed on the U.S.S. St. Paul during World War II. John married Marian Louise McKelvey on March 15, 1948 in Lancaster. He worked at John Deere in Dubuque, and in 1962 started and owned Star Uniforms. John was a police officer for the Platteville Police Department from 1950 to 1954, and was a sheriff for the Grant County Sheriff Department from 1955 to 1959.
John is survived by his son, John Jr. (Janet); his grandchildren, Julie (Brian) Thiel and John Stuer III; his great-grandchildren, Kallie, C.J., and Ian Thiel; his beloved dog, Bucky; and a niece & nephew.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian in 1984; his parents; and two sisters, Adeline Haltmeyer and Theodora Faris.
Private Family Services were held at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home, Platteville. Burial with military honors was in Hillside Cemetery, Platteville.
