Jeffrey L. Butson, age 65, passed away peacefully at his home in Platteville on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. Jeff was born in Cuba City, WI on October 4, 1949, the son of Donald and Bette (Harty) Butson. He was a 1967 graduate of Platteville High School. Jeff served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 with the 4th Infantry Division, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon his discharge, he returned to Platteville and enrolled at UW Platteville.
Shortly after his 21st birthday Jeff was paralyzed as a result of a car accident. He never complained about his condition and did not let his disability control his life. He returned to college, graduating in 1977, and was then employed by the Public Service Commission in Madison until his retirement. His attitude toward life was a true inspiration to all who knew him.
Jeff is survived by his brother, Kelly Butson of Waunakee; his sisters, Jan Reed of Tucson, AZ and Julie Stead of Forest Grove, OR;his uncle, Warren Doug (Gert) Butson of Platteville; nieces, Rochelle Reed, Tanya Reed and Amanda Stead; a nephew, Zachary Butson; and by many special friends, too numerous to count, who will forever remember his courage and friendship.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Rett; and his brother-in-law, Kevin Stead.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Platteville, with Fr. Faustino Ruiz officiating. Burial with military honors was in Calvary Cemetery in Platteville. Friends called from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015 at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. A celebration of life followed the graveside services at the V.F.W. Bar, 110 E. Mineral St, Platteville. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Platteville is assisting the family.
