James L. Hermsen, age 88, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. He was born October 5, 1926 the son of John and Clementine (Bohnenkamp) Hermsen. Jim graduated from Bloomington High School and was drafted into the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict. He returned home to farm in rural Bloomington. Jim was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 5 of Patch Grove. Jim was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and Green Bay Packer football. He was known for his great storytelling. Jim dearly enjoyed his family and keeping up with their activities.
Surviving is his siblings: Arlene (Leonard) Schmidt of Bloomington, Marjorie Jaynes of Prairie Du Chien, Joanne (Glen) Ward of Onalaska, Marguerite (Roland) Clinton of McGregor, IA., Kathleen (Michael) Leard of Prairie Du Chien, Caroline Bidwell of Las Vegas, NV., Philip (JoAnne) Hermsen of Auburn, AL., two sisters-in-law Jen and Eileen Hermsen of Prairie Du Chien, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents John and Clementine, James was preceded in death by his brothers Ambrose and Walter, his brother- in- law, Raymond Jaynes and his step mother Helen Hermsen.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. John Meinholz officiating. Burial with military honors was in the church cemetery. Friends called on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Martin Funeral Home of Bloomington is assisting the family. In lieu of plants and flowers, a James L. Hermsen memorial fund has been established.
