James B. Ward, age 95 of Platteville, formerly of Potosi, passed away, Friday, December 13, 2013 at Southwest Health Center in Platteville. He was born January 12, 1918 the son of Alvin and Flossie (Chadwick) Ward. James enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and married Antonette M. Meyer on November 22, 1941. He landed at Cherbourg, France with the 10th Armored Division. James toured France, Germany, Bastone, and Belgium, ending with General Patton at Garmisch, Partenkirchen with the 10th Armored Division. He received his honorable discharge October 17, 1945. He operated Wards Tavern in Potosi and later worked at John Deere in Dubuque. James was a Life Member of the Berg Averkamp VFW Post #5276, American Legion Post #473 of Potosi, and a National Member of the Tenth Armored Tiger Division. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling.
Surviving is his loving wife of 72 years Antonette, children; Robert (Marilyn)Ward ,James (Jenette) Ward, and Marilynn(Richard) Dressler; grandchildren; Heather (Mike Silha) Meir, Mandy (Christopher)Troester, Angela (David) Scanlan, James (fiance Lisa Feist) Ward III, Jennifer (Michael ) Blankstein, Christopher (Paula) Dressler, a grandson-in-law, Dennis Meir; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters in law, Phyllis and Elva Ward.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Beatrice (Earl) Fillback and Gwendolyn (Richard) Jones, and his brothers Donald and Alvin, three grandchildren: Stephanie Dressler, Carmen, Ward, Jona Ward.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson, with Fr. Richard Leffler officiating. Burial with military honors was in the St. Thomas Cemetery. Friends called on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Martin Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Potosi, is assisting the family.
