Evelyn E. Pierce, age 81, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, August 17, 2008, at the Lancaster  Care Center,  Lancaster. She was born on December 17, 1926, in S. Lancaster Township, the daughter of William and Opal (Hodoval) Wieland. Evelyn attended Boice Creek country school and graduated from  Lancaster High School. On  June 19, 1947, Evelyn was united in marriage to Robert Pierce. Together they farmed for forty-eight years on her grandfather, James Hodovals farm. Evelyn was employed with the  Lancaster Care Center as an Aide for fifteen years and then cared for the elderly in their homes. Evelyn loved to play Bingo and enjoyed picking up hickory nuts and walnuts. She would crack them open and sell them every fall. Evelyn was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies. She liked to go to the Dubuque  Greyhound Park and Casino and dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by three sisters: Claramae Scott, Hazel Runice, and Marian Hirsch; two brothers: Virgil Bud
Wieland and LeRoy Wielend; and a dearly loved grandson, Timothy Pierce.

Survivors include her four sons: Norbert (Arlene) Wieland, Potosi; Donald (Virginia) Pierce, Grundy Center, IA; Ronald (Marilyn) Pierce, Potosi; Darwin (Betty) Pierce, Potosi; twelve grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; a sister: Deloris (Donald) Metcalf, Cassville; two sisters-in-law: Arlene Wieland and Arlene (John) Roesch, all of Lancaster; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on  Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at  10:00 a.m. at the  Christ  Lutheran  Church in  Lancaster with Pastor David Froemming officiating. Burial was in the  Hurricane  Cemetery, rural  Lancaster. Friends called on  Tuesday, August 19, 2008, from  5:00 p.m. until  8:00 p.m. at the Schwartz Funeral Home in  Lancaster and from  9:00 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church.
