Edward J. Herbers, age 92, of Bloomington, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Evansville Manor in Evansville. He was born on May 5, 1918, in Bloomington, the son of Frank and Mary (Klosterman) Herbers. Edward attended St. Marys Catholic School in Bloomington. In September of 1942, he entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II in five campaigns. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945. On February 3, 1953, Edward was united in marriage to Irene Felder at St. Marys Catholic Church in Glen Haven. After their marriage, the couple farmed on the family farm near Bloomington, retiring in October of 1976. Early in his working career, Edward also sold insurance. He was strong in his Catholic faith and was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Bloomington as well as the Knights of Columbus. Edward was also a member of the Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No.148 of Bloomington. He enjoyed playing cards and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children: Monica (Bill) Gierach, Greendale; Charles (Threasa) Herbers, Bloomington; Jeffery (Deb) Herbers, Evansville; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sisters: Catherine Horne, Cleveland Heights, OH; Florence Herbers, West Chicago, IL; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, his sisters and brothers, Rose Breuer, John Herbers, Reverend Charles Herbers, Henrietta Sanders; and a great-grandson, Joseph Troxel.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 17, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Marys Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial with military honors was in St. Marys Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends called on Sunday, January 16, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington, where a 7:00 p.m. scripture service will be held. Friends also called on Monday, January 17, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.
