Darrel L. Martin, age 84, of Bagley, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Tomah. He was born on February 22, 1925, in Waterloo Township, the son of Otto "Red" and Anita Knight (Slaght) Martin. In November of 1956, he was united in marriage to Ellen C. Whitaker in Dubuque, IA.
Darrel served in the U.S. Army in WWII, including the D-Day invasion, the battle of France and Belgium and was wounded in Limburg, Germany. He received two purple hearts and was a member of DAV in Lancaster. Darrel was a patrolman for Patch Grove Township for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ellen; and a sister, Doris Jenkins.
He is survived by his cousins: Roger (Linda) Martin, Greg (Stacy) Martin and Kristi (Tom) Gildersleeve, all of Lancaster; a brother-in-law, Richard Jenkins, Morrison, IL; Alvin Joyner, Linden; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services with Military Honors were held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Nagle Cemetery, Patch Grove Township.
