Clara M. Capps, age 84 of Potosi, passed away peacefully January 27, 2013, at her home after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was born January 8, 1929, the daughter of John and Elsie (Berry) Kelly. Clara graduated from Novinger High School, Novinger, MO, in 1947. She played basketball all four years in high school. Although short in stature, she was known to be quite spunky and was asked to play on an all redheaded girls basketball team in the off season. Clara married George BuckCapps on January 11, 1947, in Kirksville, MO. Clara and Buck made their home in Dubuque, IA, where god blessed their union with three wonderful children. The family later made their home in Potosi. Clara worked at several jobs: Dubuque Packing Company, Battery Factory, Speigels, Swiss Colony, and she retired after twenty-five years at Peoples Natural Gas in Dubuque, IA. Her greatest joy was her family and friends. She was a long time member of St. Andrew Catholic Church. Clara enjoyed dancing, playing cards, gambling, water skiing, and traveling. She visited every state in the union except Alaska, and traveled throughout Europe. In France she visited the Lourdes Shrine where she received a blessed rosary that she cherished.
Survivors include her loving husband of sixty-six years, GeorgeBuck Capps; their children: Jackie Blindert; Gary (Deb) Capps; Terry Capps; eleven grandchildren: Travis and Chad Blindert, Tracy (Josh) Minnahan, Kelly (Joe) Lovergine, Kimberly (Eric) Johnson, Anthony (Angie) Capps, Michael (Jennifer) Capps, Jessica (Adam Jones) Capps, Chris (Christine) Craven, Jeff Craven and Amanda Craven; seventeen great-grandchildren and one on the way; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by three brothers: Jim, Haden, and Marion Kelly; two sisters: Vivian Truitt and Kate Kelly; three grandchildren: Sean and Bernadette Blindert and Christopher Capps; and a son-in-law, Bernie Blindert.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 1, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Richard Leffler officiating. Burial was in St. Andrew Cemetery, Tennyson. Family and friends called on Thursday, January 31, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Martin Funeral Home in Potosi is serving the family. In lieu of plants and flowers, a Clara M. Capps Memorial Fund has been established.
