Cassville

Chester L. Haas, age 95, of Cassville, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the Lancaster Care Center, Lancaster. Chester was born on June 29, 1918, the first child of Henry and Edna (Cardey) Haas. When Chester was one year old, his parents moved to the farm they purchased east of Cassville. This farm was to be his home for the rest of his life. He attended Elwell School and graduated from Cassville High School in 1936.

Chester was a World War II Army Veteran and a charter member of the Cassville VFW. After returning from the service, he farmed with his father and brother, Marvin, on the family farm. In 1950, they were the state winner of the Wisconsin Grassland Farming Contest. He continued to farm with his brother after the death of their father in 1952.

Chester was a very avid reader, being particularly interested in United States and World History and all phases of nature. He also enjoyed reminiscing with friends and relatives about the old days.

Chester is survived by his brother, Marvin, Cassville; sisters: Betty (Bill) Clauer and Sharon (Jim) Weisbenner, both of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Pearl and Jerry Bussan.

Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville, with Rev. Pamela Strakeljahn officiating. Burial with military honors accorded by the Cassville VFW Post No. 7080 and Cassville American Legion Post No. 352 was in Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery, Cassville. Friends called one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
