Charles W. Witzig, age 90, of Platteville, died on Friday, July 3, 2009, at Southwest Health Center in Platteville. He was born on September 22, 1918, in Clifton Township, the son of William and Winifred (Millard) Witzig. He graduated from Livingston High School. On February 28, 1942, Charles was united in marriage to Betty Marie Gard. Charles joined the United States Army and served his country as a medic in the Philippines during World War II. After his discharge, Charles farmed in Ellenboro Township until his retirement in 1979. Charles was a member of the VFW and enjoyed traveling with his wife.Survivors include his three children: Charlene (Pete) Schmidt, Goshen, IN; Richard Witzig, Boscobel; Robert (Holly) Witzig, Montfort; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Bob Witzig, Fennimore; a sister, Janice Austin, Platteville; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Betty on August 25, 1995; six brothers and sisters: Zoa, Marian, Paul, Joe, Ned, and Henrietta.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 6, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville with Rev. Mary Ann Floerke officiating. Private family burial with military honors was held. Friends called on Monday, July 6, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
