Carl R. Lau, age 85, of Cassville, died on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. He was born on June 6, 1923 in Cassville, the son of Charles and Gertrude (Dresen) Lau.He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1943 and served until 1946. He was a private First Class in the 202nd Anti Aircraft Artillery (automatic weapons) Battalion in New Guinea and the southern Philippines, in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He married Ruth Adrian on October 29, 1949 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville. Carl worked for the Department of Natural Resources at Nelson Dewey State Park. He was employed from 1951 until his retirement as Head Ranger in 1985. Carl was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and of the VFW Post 7080 both in Cassville.
Carl is survived by his wife, Ruth of 59 years, Cassville; his son, John (Debra) Lau, Cassville and his daughter, Julie (Larry) Leonard, Columbus; five grandchildren: Katie Lau, Grinnell, IA, Maggie (Dan) Kartman, Fennimore, Ashley Lau, LaCrosse, Sean Bonson, Belleville, WI and Sarah Bonson, Canada; one great-granddaughter, Demmy French, Canada; a sister, Retha Bausch, Dubuque, IA and a brother, Fred (Margaret) Lau, LaCrosse.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; Lucille and Adelaide Lau; five brothers, Virgil, Vincent, Herbert, Chris and Ivan Lau and a great-grandson, Ryker John Kartman.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville with Father John Norder officiating. Burial with Military Honors was held in St. Marys Settlement Cemetery, Cassville Township. Friends called from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville with a Parish Scripture Service at 4:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.
