Carl F. Bast, age 82, of Madison, formerly of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at St. Marys Hospital in Madison surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 27, 1928, in Ellenboro Township, the son of Herman and Hazel (Nehls) Bast. Carl graduated from Lancaster High School. He then joined the United States Air Force and served his country. Following his honorable discharge, Carl farmed for a number of years in Lancaster. On July 8, 1960, he was united in marriage to Marybell Brenner. In 1985, they moved to Madison where he worked as a housekeeper for UW Hospital and also drove cars for Russ Darrow. He retired and was a door greeter at Wal-Mart in Monona. Carl was a member of Odd Fellows, Busy Badger 4-H, and the VFW Post No. 2344 of Lancaster. He loved farming, hunting, watching sports, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Marybell Bast, Madison; his children: Terry (Becky Thompson) Bast, Madison; Bill (Peggy) Bast, Lancaster; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five special friends that were considered grandchildren and eleven special friends that were considered great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a son, Steve; two brothers, one sister and a grandson, Stacey.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating. Burial with military honors was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends call on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers a Carl Bast Memorial Fund has been established.
