Arlyne Marie Nuti, age 86, passed away at the Lexington Health Care Center of Bloomingdale, IL on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. She was born on May 12, 1931 in Glen Haven, WI, the daughter of Clarence and Lucy “Girlie” (Metcalf) Nuti.
Arlyne graduated from Bloomington High School in 1949, then attended Alverno College in Miwuakee Wisconsin, where she received a bachelor's degree in Music. She went on to get her master's degree from the University of Marquette.
Arlyne’s musical talent was evident early in her high school years, excelling as a vocal soloist and singing with five vocal ensembles. She played trumpet in the band and brass quartet. Arlyne received awards for her achievements in both vocal and trumpet competition at the State level.
She taught in three high schools in the Milwaukee area for eight years, and at Marquette University for five years.
Arlyne then moved to Joliet, Illinois in 1967, where she taught at Joliet East, Central and West High Schools. There she began her legendary career teaching vocal music, creating small groups that performed throughout the community. Working with her most talented vocalists, Arlyne developed them into true Madrigal performers, and she was one of the first directors in the Midwest to shift from traditional Madrigal music to more current, contemporary music. It wasn’t long before she had developed an all-singing/all-dancing group, accompanied by a powerful band. The culmination of every teaching year until her retirement in 1992 was the production of full- blown Broadway musicals of near professional nature.
Her drive, talent, dedication, and love for students characterized her true self, and they loved, admired, and respected her for creating an indelible influence on their lives.
Arlyne moved to Warrenville, Illinois in 1994. In 2007, fifteen years after her retirement, she was invited back to Joliet for a spectacular Kolage reunion celebration in her honor. On Christmas Eve of 2013, she was taken to Central DuPage Hospital of Winfield IL, and from that point until her passing in 2018 she was in the Lexington Health Care Center of Bloomingdale IL Nursing Home.
During her four years there she was content, but experienced many health issues. Arlyne established many friendships with the staff and the residents.
Arlyne was very social and pleasant to be around. Music was her talent and her love, and it was always a treat when she came to the farm for a visit and sing a duet with her father, then a sing-along in four-part harmony with members of the family and relatives. She enjoyed her visits to California for several years, spending Christmas with her sister Joan and her family.
She enjoyed her younger nieces and nephews, taking them to fun places, treating them with goodies and games. She honored her sister and brother with her professional voice, singing at both of their weddings and also at some of their children’s weddings. She sang at many other occasions, including funerals and anniversaries.
Arlyne is survived by her brother, Wayne (Carolyn) Nuti, Lancaster, WI; her sister, Joan (Nuti) Dionne, Panorama City, CA; a sister-in-law Audrey (Rohner) Nuti, Dubuque, IA; many nieces, nephews, and cousins
She was preceded in death by her mother Lucy “Girlie” Nuti, in 1948; a brother Robert Nuti, in 1984; her stepmother Alice (Kuenster) Nuti, in 1999; her father Clarence Nuti, in 2003; her brother-in-law, Cyril Dionne, in 2017; and many other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
