Alphonse J. Mick Michel, age 78, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at his residence. He was born on July 19, 1936, in Eastman, the son of Joseph and Veronica (Dohse) Michel. Mick enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict serving on the U.S.S. Wrangel, which was an ammunitions carrier. On August 22, 1959, he married Beverly J. Irish in Dubuque, IA. He was employed for over forty-three and one half years as a machinist at Unique Balance in Dubuque, IA, retiring in 2000. Mick enjoyed fishing, yard work, walking with his dogs, and visiting with his neighbors. He was a member of the Richard Burns American Legion Post No. 109.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly; a daughter, Shanna (Chester Murry) Schleicher; six grandchildren: Robin, Brooke, Olivia, Braylon Schleicher, Trever and Brandy Murry; two sisters-in-law: Katherine and June Michel; and many members of the Irish family.
Mick was preceded in death by two brothers, Gale and Robert.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lancaster. Burial with military honors was in Beetown Cemetery, Beetown. Family and friends called on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
