Alberta M. Schwartz, age 91, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. She was born on May 16, 1923, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Albert and Mary (Purcell) Udelhof. Alberta graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1941 and was a 1944 graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, IA. In 1946, she married Harry R. Schwartz in St. Paul, MN, and together they lived their entire married lives in Lancaster, where her husband, Harry, owned and operated Schwartz Hardware and Appliance. Harry preceded her in death on March 21, 1991. Alberta worked as a Registered Nurse at Orchard Manor and did private duty nursing when they wintered in Florida. She was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, the Council of Catholic Women, Grant Regional Health Center Auxiliary and the Mercy Alumni Association.
Survivors include her sons: Thomas (Kathy) Schwartz; Terrence Terry (Carol) Schwartz; her grandson, Anthony Schwartz; her daughter, Judy (Max) Lorenz and their family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father John Sasse officiating. Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Monday, June 2, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lancaster where a 2:45 p.m. rosary was held. Friends also called on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, an Alberta M. Schwartz Memorial Fund has been established.
